This presentation: provides the rationale and context for capacity training of SBHC leaders and other school health personnel; explores institutionalized and informal structures that create or sustain health disparities and inequities in populations served by SBHC leaders and other school health personnel; and introduces participants to the essential functions of public health and the ways a population approach to social determinants of health will enhance the effectiveness and influential scope of SBHC leaders and other school health personnel. The group discussion provides an opportunity for analysis and synthesis of module content.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the unique opportunities for SBHCs and other school health personnel in an era of health transformation.
  • Assess the social, environmental and political conditions that impact health and educational equity of children and youth.
  • Identify social determinants that enhance or compromise the health and educational success of children and youth.
  • Summarize and integrate concepts of module segments for applicability in school-based health centers.

Instructions — For this module:

  • Review the module’s pre-recorded presentations, which total 60 minutes (a set of guided study questions are included).
  • Complete any required readings (supplemental readings are optional).

Please note that review of all self-paced module content needs to be completed prior to your discussion session.

  • Participate in your interactive group discussion session by video conference for 90 minutes (attendance will be recorded).
  • Following your discussion session, complete an online proficiency assessment and session evaluation.
